How to Make a Hot Glue Glitter Coaster Craft Tutorial

I was asked by more than one person to try and make a coaster with hot glue, as an alternative to resin.  So, I thought I would give it a try.

It works as an alternative, but remember it has some limitations.  You don’t want to put anything hot on it, like a hot tea or coffee and you don’t want it out to leave it out on a hot day.
You will need:

–  Oven

Here is the video tutorial:

Directions:
1.  Using the silicone egg shaper that I normally use for my coasters and working on parchment paper, I let my glue gun heat up.  Start putting some hot glue into the mold and sprinkle in glitter.
2.  Keep layering as you need.
3.  I found it wasn’t leveling out, so when I had most of it in, I put the mold, with the parchment paper, on a cookie sheet and put it in the oven at 200 degrees.  Realizing I didn’t have enough glue in the mold for it to spread completely out and level out, I used scissors to cut chunks of hot glue from the glue stick and placed it in the mold.  Watching it carefully, once level, I removed the cookie sheet from the oven and let it completely cool.
4.  Remove the coaster from the mold.
I don’t think it turned out as well as the resin coasters and doesn’t have the same depth, but I think it’s a pretty good alternative.

  1. I thought the hot glue coasters were cute. I liked how when you put the pieces of hot glue in it made the coaster have white or smokey spots between the glitter. It looked like the finished product had small pits in the top of it. I have a suggestion. I bet if you paint some glossy accents over the top of it, very generously. It will fill in the pits and give it a shiner look.
