Step-by-Step Instructions for the Bunny Craft

Step 1: Prepare and Paint the Vase

Before painting the Dollar Tree cylinder vase, I used rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or oils from the outside of the vase.

Don’t forget to remove the label too!

Then, I used a fuzzy brush to apply two coats of white multi-surface paint for a solid base. I applied it in a pouncing manner because that gives the paint a little texture.

Step 2: Trim the Baby Hat

The hat is obviously too big for the vase, so I had to modify it.

Cutting straw had for the bunny craft

This is how I did that:

  • I cut the baby hat from brim to the middle of the crown, so it opened up the hat. That allows the hat to open up.
  • Then, I removed a portion of the crown, so it was open on top.
  • I proceeded to wrap the hat around the vase to check the fit, and it was still way too big, so when I had it wrapped, I was able to see where to cut it to make it a better size. I did leave overlap because I didn’t want to be caught short.
  • Then, I found the brim was still too wide, so I cut it down as well and it ended up being perfect!

**The hat I bought was also from Dollar Tree and I found it in the baby section. You would think it would be a super cheaply made hat for $1.25, but it actually had a clear mesh on the inside so it didn’t fray when I cut it and you don’t even notice the mesh.

Nicely done Dollar Tree!

Step 3: Attach the Hat to the Bunny Craft

Once I had the hat cut to a good size, I used hot glue to secure it to the vase.

Step 4: Draw the Bunny Face

Using a black permanent marker, I drew the eyes, eyelashes, nose, mouth, and whiskers.

I finished off the nose with a bright pink multi-surface paint.

Step 5: Attach the Bunny Ears

I took the bunny ear headband – FYI: also from Dollar Tree – and squished the band together. Once they were together, I inserted them into the vase, so the ears poke out from the top opening of the hat.

That’s it, now you have an adorable Easter Bunny vase or Easter decoration!

Does It Have to be a Vase?

Yes, it’s made out of a vase, but does it have to be used as a vase? If you are looking for more ways to use this bunny craft, here are some creative ideas:

  • Add some fairy lights to give it a magical glow and make this Dollar Tree Easter decor extra special. It can just be a decoration or used as a nightlight.
  • Turn it into a fun Easter candy holder! Fill it with chocolates or jelly beans for a sweet holiday treat.
  • Make multiple bunnies with different colored hats and ears, and maybe different sized vases to create an adorable Easter display.

This is a fun project to involve the kids because no two will be exactly the same and kids tend to be more creative than we adults are! So let them join in on the fun, but help little hands and fingers with the hot glue and scissors.
