I have plans…BIG plans for the vacant lot next door!
Currently, it has my craft shed, but there is a large open area in front of it that is perfect to be transformed into an entertainment area. I’ve been dreaming about this for a while.
Being in Florida, we are fortunate to be able to celebrate most of our holidays outside, no matter the time of year.
I’m seeing a large pergola draped in vibrant bougainvillea, a cozy patio area, and plenty of space for gatherings.
Did I mention we also want to build a firepit for chilly evenings?
Greg and I had many discussions and debates on how to build a firepit and we found the perfect solution with the Veranda Firepit Kit from Lowes.
This kit made starting the first step of our outdoor oasis easy and exciting!
Why Choose a Fire Pit Kit?
Honestly, I had no idea a firepit kit even existed, I thought we’d be trying to figure out how to build a firepit from scratch. We’d be figuring out the right size and estimating how many bricks we might or might not need.
The fire pit kit took all of the guesswork out of it and averted any potential arguments about size!
That feels like a big win!
The fire pit kit includes all the materials you need – bricks and a metal insert. It’s a stress-free way to ensure the firepit is not only beautiful but also functional.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Fire Pit Kit from Lowe’s
- A flat, level surface
- A long level
- A shovel, incase you need to level the surface
- Landscape construction adhesive (optional)
How to Build a Firepit
Step 1: Prepare the Site
Choose a level spot at least 10 feet away from structures of overhanging trees. If the ground isn’t level, dig out the are an add a layer of gravel or sand to create a stable base.
We were lucky that our firepit location is located in the middle of an open yard and when Greg broke out the level, it was remarkably flat, so we didn’t need to do any digging or add any gravel or sand.
Step 2: Lay Out the Fire Pit Ring and Build a Firepit
Greg figured out this easy way to do it. We laid the fire pit ring where we wanted it and then laid the bricks around it and tucked them under the lip. That ensured we had them round and perfectly placed for the size.
Once the first layer was finished, we removed the ring and laid the next layer and staggered the bricks. Then, we put the fire pit ring back in, just to make sure it had the right round shape, in case it needed any adjustments.
We repeated the process on the third level and left the metal ring in place.
Step 3: Secure the Fire Pit (optional)
If you want to add additional security, you can add construction adhesive between the layers. Let it dry before you use the firepit.
Tips for Enjoying Your Firepit
- Always follow local fire regulations and guidelines.
- Use dry, seasoned wood to minimize smoke.
- Keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby for safety.
