Dollar Tree Craft | DIY Halloween Mummy

Learn how to make a DIY Halloween mummy with this easy Dollar Tree craft! Create your own mummy using affordable Dollar Tree craft supplies!

When I was a kid growing up outside of Chicago, my parents took my sister, brother and I to the Field Museum. It was a massive old building filled with dinosaur bones and treasures…but that day…there was a special exhibit in town: The Treasures of King Tutankhamun…

Yup…King Tut

I have flash memories of it.

I remember being excited.

I don’t think I really understood it…my Dad tried to explain it…but what did I need to know?

I was eight…mummies were cool.

I remember it was crowded. I remember it smelled funny.

I remember walking into the dark, quiet room and seeing those real mummies wrapped in layers of ancient cloth staring at me from within their glass cases.

Okay…they were laying there looking up…but I felt the weight of their presence.

I was equal parts fascinated and creeped out!

They weren’t just Halloween decorations…they were actual people!

People who were thousands of years old!

I couldn’t wrap my head around how old they were, and ever since then, mummies have given me that eerie chill that’s perfect for Halloween. It’s no surprise that so many years later…I’m still making mummy-themed crafts!

Step-by-Step DIY Halloween Mummy Tutorial

Step 1: Prep the Vase and Attach the Eyes

Start by grabbing a vase from Dollar Tree. I like the cylinder vases but you could use any shape.

I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol.

Pick a pair of googly eyes and decide how big or small you want them to be.

I used eyes that were a little larger than an inch.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the eyes onto the front of the vase.

Step 2: Wrap the DIY Halloween Mummy

Here comes the fun part—wrapping your mummy! Use Mod Podge as your adhesive.

You can use actual bandages, paper towels, toilet paper, or even old t-shirt fabric. Tear or cut your wrapping material into strips, but don’t worry about making them perfect.

Applying bandages on the DIY Halloween mummy

Imperfection adds character! Brush some Mod Podge around the vase and start layering the strips around the eyes and all over the vase.

Overlap the strips to create dimension. You can even wrap slightly over the eyes to make it seem like they’re peeking through the bandages.

Step 3: Add Texture and Paint

Once the vase is wrapped, it’s time to give it a more “aged” appearance.

Lightly brush some white acrylic paint over the bandages to brighten them up.

Then, mix white with a bit of burnt umber and go over the edges of the bandages to create an old, weathered look. It’ll make your mummy look like it’s been hiding in a tomb for centuries!

Step 4: Give the Mummy a Face

Give your mummy some personality!

Using a black marker or paint, add a grumpy or spooky mouth and some angry eyebrows to the vase.

This adds a fun touch to the mummy’s expression. Don’t forget to paint the inside of the vase behind the eyes with black to help them pop!

Step 5: Light the Dollar Tree Craft Up

To finish your Dollar Tree mummy craft, add a string of fairy lights inside the vase to make it glow from within.

The lights will peek through the bandages, giving it a creepy yet cozy vibe—perfect for Halloween night!
