How to Clean Curtains: Week 2 of the What We Forget to Clean Series
Welcome back to the What We Forget to Clean series! In this second installment, we’re tackling something we often overlook: how to clean curtains.
I want to say I’m on top of cleaning my curtains…but when I start doing the math…perhaps I could be better.
Curtains collect dust, allergens, and odors over time, making it important to clean them regularly…especially if anyone in your household has allergies.
Hello, pollen!
Here is my easy process for giving your curtains – and drapes – a fresh makeover.
Why Cleaning Curtains is Important
Curtains and drapes are not just decorative, they are functional too. As I mentioned, they trap dust, allergens, and odors, which can accumulate. Learning how to clean curtains ensures that your home stays fresh and hygienic.
How to Clean Curtains: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Remove the Curtains from the Rod
Start by grabbing a ladder and carefully taking down the curtains. If your curtains are long and heavier, like mine, handle one panel at a time. For lighter options like sheers, you might be able to wash two panels at a time.
Step 2: Check the Care Label
Before washing, always check the care labels on your curtains and drapes. Some fabrics are machine washable, while others may require dry cleaning or handwashing.
I personally feel strongly about my curtains being machine washable. If I have to take them to a dry cleaner…if we are being honest…it’s not happening.
But that’s just me.
At this time, inspect your curtains for stains and spot-treat them with a gentle detergent or stain remover. Pay extra attention to areas exposed to frequent touching, such as edges or tiebacks.
Step 3: Wash the Curtains
- For Machine Washable-Curtains: Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent if you think your curtains are on the delicate side. If you have an agitator, definitely go with a gentle cycle. I have a front loader and put it on the quick wash and used warm water.
- For Sheers: If you have an agitator, place them in a large mesh laundry bag to protect the delicate fabric.
- For Heavy Drapes: Consider a professional dry cleaner or use a steam cleaner for spot cleaning.
We once bought a house that had sheer curtains across a wall of sliding doors. I thought they were unsalvageable. They were ridiculously dusty and had an ugly grayish-cream color.
Before tossing them in the garbage, I decided to toss them in the wash. I didn’t think they would survive and I certainly didn’t expect them to come out a bright beautiful white!
Don’t underestimate what a simple wash can do for your drapes and sheers.
Step 4: Dry and Iron
If you are worried about your curtains shrinking, let them air-dry. Otherwise, I popped mine into the dryer on Quick Dry, which was 15 minutes and I used Medium Heat.
They came out slightly damp and I quickly hung them up, so as they continued to dry, the wrinkles would straighten themselves.
It worked like a charm!
Be sure to remove the curtains from the dryer immediately when the dryer stops. If you leave them in the dryer, they will definitely wrinkle.
If you need to touch them up with an iron, do so carefully.
Step 5: Rehang and Enjoy the Freshness
Before you rehang your curtains, be sure to take a cloth to wipe the curtain rod. The dust collects there too!
Now, rehang your curtains and take a moment to appreciate how clean and refreshed they look and probably smell. Knowing how to clean a curtain can make your entire room feel brighter and cleaner!
How Often Should You Clean Curtains?
- Light Curtains and Sheers: Every 6-9 months
- Heavier Drapes: Once a year
- Spot Cleaning: As needed, especially in high-traffic areas or homes with pets
Bonus Tips for Curtain Maintenance
- To keep them fresh between washings, by vacuuming them weekly with a brush attachment.
- Rotate curtains or drapes to even out sun exposure and prevent fading.
Cleaning your curtains doesn’t have to be a chore. With these simple steps, you’ll always know how to clean curtains effectively.
