Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Make This Easy Grinch Ornament
Step 1: Paint the Ornament
Paint the entire surface of the ornament with green acrylic paint to create the Grinch’s vibrant complexion.
Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on. This will serve as the base color for your easy Grinch painting.
Step 2: Sketch the Grinch’s Face
Use a pencil to lightly outline the characteristics of the Grinch, including:
- His mischievous smile
- Sharp, arched eyebrows
- A small nose
- Large almond-shaped eyes
When you start thinking about how to make the grinch, don’t do it from memory. I used a pencil and erased and redrew the Grinch’s features until I got it the way I wanted it. To get the right feel, I pulled a picture of him up on my phone.
Step 3: Paint the Grinch’s Eyes & Raised Features
Paint the eyes with yellow acrylic paint, capturing the bold signature look of the Grinch.
Outline the pencil sketches using Gallery Glass lead paint to create raised black features.
FYI: There is no lead in the paint. The paint is a dimensional that is used to look like leading is stained glass.
This step adds depth and dimension to all of the characteristics of the Grinch. From the eyebrows to the nose, to the mouth, and the outline of the eyes.
Step 4: Add a Glossy Eye Effect
How to make the Grinch have a glassy and lifelike effect, apply a thin layer of UV resin over the painted eyes. Use a toothpick to get it in the corners if it doesn’t flow there itself.
Cure the resin under a UV light, following the resin manufacturer’s directions for the recommended curing time.
Step 6: Attach the Santa Hat
Glue the Santa hat to the top of the ornament to complete the Grinch’s festive transformation.
- Adjust the angle of the hat to give it more personality.
- Add plastic shopping bags in the hat to give it shape.
- Add a wire in the hat if you want to be able to bend it and have it hold its shape.
All of these thing will make this Dollar Tree craft truly one of a kind!
If you want to hang the ornament, you can cut a hole in the back of the Santa hat so a ribbon or string can come through for you to hang it.
Step 7: Seal it! (Optional)
If you are wondering how to make the Grinch last for a long time, seal the ornament for durability, especially if you plan on having it outside.
