Craft or Crap Epic Yard Art Challenge Video Tutorial
Here is the video tutorial, so you can see exactly how I made it!
Step-by-Step Tutorial
1. Clean and Prep Recycled Items
Use rubbing alcohol to clean any dirt or residue from the recycled plastic ornament. Mine had been outside for a while so there was no color left but there was some glitter left on it.
As long as it wasn’t loose, I didn’t think it needed to be removed. The glitter gave it a good texture.
At this time, you will want to make sure the size of the hole in the ornament will accommodate the dowel rod.
2. Assemble the Sun’s Rays
Disassemble the fan by pulling the blades from the fabric. The fan blades and skewers will be used to create the rays of the sun.
Drill holes in the ornament for the fan blades.
3. Add Skewers and the Fan Blades
Drill holes between the fan blades to insert the skewers. Once all of the holes are drilled, the fan blades and skewers can be inserted.
4. Adhere and Reinforce
Use JB Weld Clear Weld to adhere the skewers and fan blades securely to the ornament. I put cups under the fan blades that needed to be positioned correctly. Once the ClearWeld cured, they were very secure.
5. Paint and Glaze
Spray paint the entire structure with outdoor-friendly paint. I did yellow and accented with red. I did multiple layers. Finish with Rustoleum Triple Thick Glaze for added protection.
An optional step is to take the dowel rod and seal it with penetrating epoxy so that it won’t rot from the weather and in the ground.
That’s it! Once it was all dry, I put it in a flower pot and it livened up the whole flower bed!
It can go in so many different places!
