How to Make a Resin Sunflower Yard Art

Learn how to use resin to make a sunflower that is perfect to hang outside as yard art!

I made the plaster version of the sunflower and I thought I would do a resin version. I mainly wanted to show you that you can use these silicone molds with both materials. Since fall is coming, I went with a sunflower look on both. Remember, this can be ANY color you want!

Here is the video tutorial:

Directions

1.  Paint the center of the mold with a bronze acrylic paint. It may take multiple coats.

2.  Prepare your resin, according to the package directions.

3.  Mix in a bunch of glitter. I also added pigment powder and india ink.

4.  Pour into mold. Depending on how much resin you prepared, it might not cover the entire mold.  There is a slight slope to the mold, which I did not realize. My resin ran to the ends. I let it set.

5.  Then I mixed another batch of resin and put more of the India ink, to try and make it more opaque. I poured it in and let it set.

6.  When cured, unmold it!

That’s it! You don’t need to have all of the items I used. I was experimenting and throwing things together. Another way to do it would be, mix the glitter and the resin together and pour it in. You want a layer of resin across the whole piece.

Once set, you can take yellow acrylic paint and paint the resin (while still in the mold). It might take one or two coats. Allow the paint to dry. Then you can add a clear coat of resin to seal it all. That will give you a solid, or opaque background for the glitter and/or pigment powder.

  1. Hi my Love Mona, I love the resin sunflower….Although they are both very nice. The resin has more sparkle and different shades of yellow. I think the resin will also hold up better outside. Thanks for sharing. Love ya' Patricia
