Beachy Coaster DIY Memory Coaster – Another Coaster Friday

It’s summer and what is more summer than the beach? I had some leftover sand, glitter, and resin mixture and this is what it turned into.

This is a great opportunity to create a three-dimensional scrapbook! You can make one for each of your vacations. Collect some sand and small shells (which are easier to find, but you never know what to do with them) and turn them into a cool home decor item and conversation piece!

Supplies You Will Need

• Coaster mold
• White glitter
• Sand
• Blue India ink
• Small shells, sand dollar, starfish
• Mod Podge

• Resin
  • When deciding on which resin to use for your coasters, you need to keep in mind whether you want it just for cold cups or for hot as well.
    • If only for cold drinks, you can be flexible and use whatever brand you like:
      • Easy Cast
      • Art Resin
      • Clear Cast
    • If you want it to work for both hot and cold drinks, you need to look for a heat resistant resin, like these:
      • FX Poxy ~ According to the manufacturer, this one is heat resistant to 500° F.
      • Stone Coat

Directions

1.  Prepare your resin, according to the package directions.

2.  Mix sand and white or clear glitter into the resin. I add the glitter to the sand because when you mix sand with resin, it gets much darker. The glitter lightens it up and as a bonus gives it some shimmer.  Make sure the mixture is REALLY thick.  

3.  Put it into the coaster mold. Don’t have it go to the edges.

4.  Leave it to sit for a little while and make sure it is sticky. Begin pressing your shells and other pieces into the resin sand. If you are using a starfish or sand dollar, make sure you seal them first. Use some Mod Podge and let them completely dry before adding them to the piece.

5.  Let it sit for a while.

6.  Mix a small amount of resin and add a small amount (a drop or two) of blue India ink. Mix well.

7.  Carefully pour or drip the resin into the parts around the sand, where you didn’t go to the edge.

8.  Allow to cure or at least sit for several hours.

9.  Prepare more resin and this time pour a clear coat over the top. Make sure you made enough to create a level surface.  Remember the shells can be pretty tall.

10.  Allow to cure a minimum of 12 hours before unmolding.
