I wandered out in the yard to find twig to create these two wreath ornaments.
Here’s the video tutorial, so you can see exactly how I made it:
I went with traditional colors on one, while the other uses non-traditional colors.
You will need:
– Card stock
– Twigs
– Brown acrylic paint
– Dowel rod caps
– Hot glue
– Ribbon
*Depending on how you want to decorate your wreath, depends on the other color of acrylic paint you would need and if you want to glitter the dowel caps, you would also need white glue and glitter.
Directions:
1. Trace a larger circle on the card stock and a smaller circle inside of the larger circle. This is for the size of your wreath. I used the top of a Solo cup for the outside circle and a pop can for the inside. Cut out the wreath.
2. Paint the paper wreath with brown acrylic paint. I painted it brown so if any of the paper should show through, it would not be as noticeable as if it were white.
3. Go outside and find twigs or thin sticks and cut them into smaller, random pieces.
4. Begin hot gluing the twigs onto the paper wreath. Tip: I usually will begin by gluing four evenly spaced pieces and filling in between. Otherwise, you might not work with the curve and end up with some lined up in a straight line.
5. Continue filling until you have completely filled in both sides with the twigs.
6. To create the red berries, I painted small wooded dowel rod caps (from craft store) and painted them red. When dry, I painted them with white glue and sprinkled them with glitter. Then I hot glued them in place and tied a ribbon on the wreath for hanging.
7. If you wanted to do the Joy wreath, I painted the dowel caps with a light blue/green and painted over them with the glitter paint in the same color. I used Martha Stewart paint for those.
8. To make the Joy sign, I printed (on a laser printer) the word JOY, on card stock. I took a metallic silver acrylic paint, watered it down and painted over the word JOY. I allowed it to dry and then cut it into strips because I was going for more of a slat look. After I cut them into strips, I took a black permanent marker an ran it just along the edges to give it a finished, almost a border look. It’s a very subtle touch, but I think it makes a difference. I hot glued the JOY into place, by putting a dot of hot glue on each end of each piece and placed them.
I then finished with the dowel caps and hot glued them into place.
Tie on a ribbon and you are done!
